Historical Background
The Union of Myanmar is a country in South
East Asia witha a population of 56 million.
Its is a multi-racial country of 135 ethnic
groups with Barmar being the majority.
Buddhism is the main religion with 87%
adherents. Christianity, slam, Hinduism and
traditional faiths make up the rest.
Although English Baptists under Felix Carey
and Chater began mission work as early as
1807, it was not successful. Protestant
mission work is therefore dated with the
arrival of the American Baptist missionary
couple, Dr. Adoniram and Mrs. Ann Judson on
July 13, 1813. The Judsons preached the
gospel for many years before the first
convert, Maung Naw was baptized in 1819. The
gospel spread very slowly among the Barmar
Buddhists but was joyously accepted by the
Kayins, Kachins, Chins and other ethnic
minorities who adhered to tratditional
faiths. the repidly growing number of
Christians finally led to the formation of
ther Burma Baptist Missionary Convention on
15th December, 1965, later known as Burma
Baptist Convention and today as Myanmar
Baptist Convention. |
